Dr. Benishek Advises Residents to Seek Shelter, Stay Away from Duck Lake

May 25, 2012 Issues: Congressional Issues

WASHINGTON, DC: Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today shared his concern and thoughts with the community of Luce County following the news of the Duck Lake Fire.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to the residents who have been displaced as well as the brave first responders who are working tirelessly to put out this fire," said Dr. Benishek.

A fire caused by a lightning strike on Wednesday evening has spread with intensity due to strong winds and high temperatures. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources estimates the fire has consumed 10,000 acres. Residents north and northeast of Pike Lake are in a mandatory evacuation zone and are advised to seek shelter at the Newberry Youth Center.

"The American Red Cross will be assisting in the efforts, and we are grateful for their support. I will continue to monitor this unfortunate situation and post additional resources for residents on my website and Facebook page," added Dr. Benishek.

If you or someone you know needs assistance, please contact the American Red Cross Superior Upper Peninsula Chapter at (906)228-3659. Residents can also contact Dr. Benishek’s Marquette office at (906)273-1661, or the emergency shelter at (906)293-3729. Northern Michiganders interested in volunteering or donating should contact the American Red Cross emergency shelter in Newberry at (906)293-3729.
