Brigadier General Robert A. Berman is deputy chief of staff, materiel, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Wiesbaden, Germany. He is responsible for the materiel posture of all Air Force organizations assigned to USAFE. These responsibilities encompass maintenance, supply, transportation and procurement of all goods and services required by the organizations, and additionally, the operation and control of the USAFE munitions functions.

General Berman was born in Champaign, Ill., in 1918. He completed high school in San Antonio, Texas, and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., in 1942 with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as second lieutenant. He completed advanced flight training at Roswell, N.M., that same year.

During World War II, he served in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations and on Tinian Island in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He participated in 24 combat missions.

General Berman returned to the United States in 1946 and served with the Strategic Air Command in various capacities until 1954. He went to Fort Worth Army Air Field, Texas, as air operations officer with the 58th Bombardment Wing and then served as executive officer for the assistant chief of staff, operations, Eighth Air Force. During this time he completed the Air Tactical School, in 1947, and the Logistics Staff Officers Course at the Air Command and Staff School in 1951.

He was named assistant chief of staff, materiel, Seventeenth Air Force at Nouasseur Air Base, Morocco, in June 1954. From 1955 to 1959 he was assigned to the Research and Development Directorate, Headquarters, U.S. Air Force.

Since 1960 General Berman has been associated with the Air Force Logistics Command or its predecessor, Air Materiel Command. He completed the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in July 1960, and was assigned as director of maintenance at Mobile Air Materiel Area, Brookley Air Force Base, Ala. He served in a similar capacity and later became the director of materiel management at San Antonio Air Materiel Area, Kelly Air Force Base, Texas, from June 1963 to June 1966.

General Berman was transferred to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, in June 1966 where he first served as the Air Force Logistics Command deputy commander of maintenance engineering. In November 1967 he was named the command's comptroller.

General Berman was assigned as deputy chief of staff, materiel, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe in June 1968.

His military decorations include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, and Air Force Distinguished Unit Award Ribbon.

He was promoted to the temporary grade of brigadier general effective July 1, 1967, with date of rank June 21, 1967.
