Major General John E. Griffith is director of operations and logistics, J-3/4, Headquarters U.S. Transportation Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.
General Griffith was born in 1930, in Kansas City, Kan. He graduated from Stanley (Kan.) Rural High School in 1948 and earned a bachelor of science degree in social science from Troy State University in 1975. He completed Armed Forces Staff College in 1971 and was a distinguished graduate of the Air War College in 1975.
After his enlistment in the Air Force in 1948, the general was assigned to KB-29 air refueling squadrons at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., and March Air Force Base, Calif., until 1954. During this period he also served a temporary tour of duty on Guam and in Japan with the 98th Bombardment Wing in support of United Nations activity in South Korea. He then completed a tour of duty as an adviser to the Royal Danish air force from 1954 to 1957.
He graduated from Officer Candidate School in June 1957, and after attending transportation officer training, reported to the 1705th Air Transport Group, McChord Air Force Base, Wash., as a passenger service officer. He later served as the group adjutant and headquarters squadron commander. In June 1960 he was assigned to the 1503rd Air Transport Wing in Japan as a duty officer in traffic control and, in January 1962, became the wing's assistant chief of traffic.
He then served at Travis Air Force Base, Calif., as chief of the Cargo Movement Division, Headquarters 22nd Air Force. In May 1965 he was assigned to Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, as base chief of transportation and later served as commander of the 33rd Transportation Squadron. He was also the senior Air Force representative at the Saigon Water Port and chief of Operation Special Express - moving air munitions by the Air Force's largest-ever naval fleet, composed of 29 Air Force-owned, operated and maintained LCM-6 landing craft.
General Griffith was assigned to Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, as chief of services and assistant chief of transportation for the 61st Military Airlift Wing from June 1966 to June 1969. In July 1969 he became executive officer to the special assistant for strategic mobility to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C. After graduating from the Armed Forces Staff College in January 1971, the general returned to Washington as an action officer and later served as chief of the Programs Branch in the Directorate of Transportation at Headquarters U.S. Air Force.
The general entered the Air War College in August 1974, and completed both the Air War College and degree requirements with Troy State University. General Griffith was assigned as director of transportation, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., in August 1975. Transferring to Headquarters Military Airlift Command, Scott Air Force Base, in August 1978, he served initially as assistant deputy chief of staff for air transportation.
In July 1979 he became the command's deputy chief of staff for air transportation. From September 1982 to May 1985 he was assigned as the director of transportation at Air Force headquarters. He then served as commander of the Defense Fuels Supply Center, Cameron Station, Alexandria, Va. He assumed his present duties in September 1987.
His military decorations and awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
He was promoted to major general Nov. 21, 1985, with date of rank Dec. 1, 1982.
