Brigadier General John J. Gorman is deputy chief of staff for intelligence, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. He is responsible for managing the air intelligence collection and application throughout the Pacific area and advising the commander in chief, PACAF, on all matters pertaining to intelligence.
General Gorman was born in 1920, in New York City, and graduated from Cristobal High School in the Panama Canal Zone in 1938. In 1939 he received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. He completed pilot training in December 1942 and in January 1943 graduated from the academy and received his commission as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps.
During the early part of his career, General Gorman was a B-17 aircraft pilot and instructor pilot in bomber groups in Washington and Florida. From March 1944 until September 1945 he served in Italy as a B-17 bomber pilot and squadron commander and flew bomber missions against a number of significant targets in the European Theater of Operations.
In December 1945 he was assigned to the War Department on the Special Staff and in January 1948 joined the Air Staff, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. In 1949 he completed the Air Command and Staff School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.
In April 1952 General Gorman was assigned to the 7050th Air Intelligence Services Wing, U.S. Air Forces in Europe, where he became director of operations and training and deputy commander. In September 1953 he became a staff officer with the Tenth Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany. He began a three-year tour of duty in February 1955 at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., first as director of plans and programming and later as assistant deputy chief of staff for operations.
He joined Strategic Air Command in August 1958 and became deputy director of intelligence at Fifteenth Air Force Headquarters, March Air Force Base, Calif. In July 1962 he entered into a three-year assignment as director of intelligence with Eighth Air Force, SAC, at Westover Air Force Base, Mass. He joined the intelligence staff at SAC Headquarters, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., in June 1965 as assistant deputy chief of staff for intelligence.
In November 1968 General Gorman became assistant deputy chief of staff for intelligence with Headquarters Seventh Air Force, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. In June 1969 he assumed duties as deputy chief of staff for intelligence, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces.
His military decorations include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal, and Distinguished Unit Citation Emblem.
He was promoted to the grade of brigadier general effective Feb. 7, 1970, with date of rank Jan.19, 1970.
