Brigadier General Kenneth R. Milam is the deputy chief of staff for maintenance, Headquarters Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
General Milam was born in 1929, in Uvalde, Texas. He graduated from Brackenridge High School in San Antonio, Texas; earned a bachelor of science degree in management from Chaminade College in Honolulu, Hawaii; and attended the Executive Management Program of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School.
General Milam was commissioned in 1953 and, after attending pilot training, he served the next three years as a fighter pilot in Korea and Japan. He then left active service for eight months in 1956.
Returning to the Air Force in 1957, General Milam spent one year ferrying fighter aircraft to North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries. From February to November 1958, he had duty at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, S.C., as an F-100 fighter pilot. For the next eight years he was assigned as an aircraft commander with the Strategic Air Command and served at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont.; Homestead Air Force Base, Fla.; and Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska.
In September 1966 General Milam returned to the fighter cockpit and was an F-4 aircraft commander at George Air Force Base, Calif., until March 1967 when he was assigned duty in Southeast Asia. His service in Southeast Asia includes more than 100 combat missions over North Vietnam in the F-4, while assigned to the 8th Fighter Wing at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, as well as combat in the T-28, 0-1, and A-1 aircraft.
General Milam returned from Southeast Asia in November 1967 and went on leave status from the Air Force after being selected by 20th Century Fox to do the stunt flying and combat scenes for "Tora, Tora, Tora," a motion picture documenting the attack on Pearl Harbor. Most of this flying was done in Japanese zero-type fighters, torpedo bombers, dive bombers, and the American P-40 fighter.
General Milam was a division chief in the Operations Plans Directorate of Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, before moving to Kelly Air Force Base, Texas, in June 1972 to serve as director of distribution and then director of maintenance at the San Antonio Air Logistics Center. He assumed his current post in December 1976.
He is a command pilot with approximately 4,000 hours in fighter and multiengine aircraft. His military decorations and awards include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with five oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 11 oak leaf clusters, and the Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters. He also received the 1975 Officer of the Year award from the Alamo Chapter of the Air Force Association, and the 1976 Air Force Association National Award for Logistics Management.
He was promoted to the grade of brigadier general Sept. 1, 1977, with date of rank Aug. 26, 1977.
