George Ferrow Smith was born in Washington, D.C., in 1905. He graduated from high school at Addison, N.Y. in 1923 and from the New York Military Academy the following year. On June 9, 1928 he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and was commissioned a second lieutenant of Infantry.
That September General Smith began flying training, graduated Nov. 21, 1929, and transferred to the Air Corps. After duty with the 27th Pursuit Squadron at Selfridge Field, Mich., he entered the Air Corps Engineering School at Wright Field, Ohio in August 1932, graduated the following June and became an engine development officer at Wright Field. In February 1935 the general was named assistant chief of the Engine Installation Branch there, becoming chief a year later, and assistant chief of the Power Plant Laboratory there in December 1942.
Going to the Mediterranean Theater in February 1944, General Smith served as Air Inspector of the Army Air Force Service Command, becoming chief of the Air Maintenance Division there that April.
Reassigned to Wright Field, Ohio in May 1945, General Smith was designated chief of the Service Engineering Supply Division, becoming chief of the Aircraft Projects Section in the Engineering Division in September 1946. He resumed his position as chief of the Aircraft Projects Section at Wright Field in January 1949.
Assuming command of the Fourth Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base, Va., in September 1949, the general took the Wing to Korea in November 1950.
Joining the Air Defense Command the following May, the general was appointed deputy for operations of the Eastern Air Defense Force at Stewart Air Force Base, N.Y., becoming vice commander, EADF there in June 1952. Moving to Ent Air Force Base, Colo., on Sept. 1, 1954, he was named chief of staff of the Air Defense Command, assuming additional duty as chief of staff of the continental Air Defense Command.
Moving to the Air Materiel Command, on July 25, 1956, General Smith took command of the Central Air Materiel Area, Europe, Air Materiel Force, AMC, European Area, with station at Chateauroux, France.
His decorations include the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star Medal. He is rated a command pilot, combat observer and aircraft observer.
