Major General Clifton D. Wright Jr. is director of engineering and services, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics and Engineering, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.
General Wright was born in 1932, in New York City and grew up at various military installations. These included Langley Air Force Base, Va.; Fort McClellan, Ala.; Wiesbaden Air Base, Germany; and Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. Upon graduation from high school at Fort Walton Beach, Fla., the general attended Clemson (S.C.) University graduating in 1955 with a bachelor's degree in architectural engineering. He has a master's degree in management from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., and is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C.
He entered the U.S. Air Force in April 1955 and was assigned to the 374th Installations Squadron, Tachikawa Air Base, Japan, as chief, Contract Inspection Section, and later as chief, Engineering and Construction Branch. General Wright's next assignment was to the Air Force Ballistic Missile Division, Camp Cooke (now Vandenberg Air Force Base), Calif., in April 1957. There he was deputy base civil engineer during initial stages of base development. He later served as project officer for Capehart Housing construction and as Atlas weapon system project officer with Headquarters 1st Missile Division.
In October 1961 General Wright went to Italy for duty as base civil engineer at San Vito dei Normanni Air Station. Upon his return to the United States in April 1962, he was assigned as base civil engineer for Manzano Base, N.M., where he remained until he entered the Air Command and Staff College in 1966.
Following graduation in 1967, he was again assigned overseas, this time for a one-year tour of duty with Headquarters Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. In July 1968 he transferred to Headquarters Field Command (Defense Atomic Support Agency), Sandia Base, N.M., as command civil engineer in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics. From 1971 to 1972, General Wright attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and concurrently earned a master's degree.
From August 1972 to February 1973, he was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe at Lindsey Air Station, Germany, as director of operations and maintenance. He then became assistant deputy chief of staff, engineering and services, and in April 1974 he was named the command's deputy chief of staff, engineering and services.
Returning to the United States in August 1975, he was assigned to Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., as deputy chief of staff, engineering and services. From August 1978 to January 1980 he served as the first commander of the Air Force Engineering and Services Center at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla. He then moved to Air Force headquarters, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Engineering and Logistics, as deputy director of engineering and services. General Wright assumed his present duties in August 1982.
He is a registered professional engineer in the state of New Mexico.
The general wears the senior missile badge. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster and Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal.
He was promoted to major general Jan. 1, 1982, with date of rank Aug. 1, 1978.
