South Dakota's congressional delegation officially announced Wednesday its opposition to a restructuring plan for the VA Health Care System of the Black Hills that would close most of the existing VA facilities in Hot Springs.

Sens. Tim Johnson and John Thune and Rep. Kristi Noem have questioned and complained about the restructuring plan since it was announced in December, but they stopped short of actually opposing it until Wednesday.

Announcing opposition now offers another opportunity to pressure U.S. Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki for a meeting about the issue in Hot Springs. The delegation's letter follows a similar request three weeks ago to Shinseki from congressional members from South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska.

Advocates of saving the aging VA facilities in Hot Springs said Wednesday they appreciated the latest effort from the delegation to get a response from Washington, D.C.

Rich Gross, a member of the Save the VA executive committee in Hot Springs, said he worries that the Nov. 6 election could further delay overdue answers from Shinseki's office. But he still hopes for a meeting and a chance to argue the case against closing the Hot Springs facilities directly to the VA secretary.

"We're still waiting for some positive statement from the secretary's office concerning a meeting, whether that means the delegation's invitation to come to Hot Springs, which we'd prefer, or includes an invitation for the delegation and us to go there," Gross said, referring to Washington, D.C.

It's long past time for answers from the VA, Gross said.

"The longer this goes on, the more unsettled things remain at the VA in Hot Springs among the employees, the more unsettled the community is," he said. "It's a community that needs to move forward, and we've been waiting almost a year."

Steve DiStasio, director of the VA Black Hills Health Care System, was part of a meeting on Oct. 10 with VA officials in Washington, D.C. He said Wednesday that Black Hills officials have reviewed comments and suggestions from critics of the plan and offered a recommendation that he wasn't prepared to discuss publicly.

"It is now in the secretary's office, and our role is to await a decision or further instructions," DiStasio said.

@I would rather be, did you even read Save the VA's alternate proposal? The VA lied in their financial analysis and conveniently forgot to add the costs of maintaining the Hot Springs facility if they closed it and built a new one in Rapid. To the tune of 148 million dollars extra over those same 30 years. Save the VA used the VA's own figures they provided through FOIA requests and not only found their own numbers higher than they claimed in their "analysis" aka anti rural propoganda, but that the VA has misled taxpayers and stakeholders for decades. BHHCS Admins have a clear cut agenda to close the VA not as a real tax money saving effort but to put your money in the pockets of their friends in Rapid City, no matter how many veterans are harmed. Teapubs, you're all so gung ho to spend trillions on the wars that turn men & women into vets but not taking care of them. Thankfully there are common sense, patriotic Republicans and Democrats to stand in your way.

The "powers that be" had intentions of closing the Hot Springs VA years before now, but they needed to strategically plan everything first. Like starting to ship off all of the patients to Fort Meade for service and closing programs, functions, services, etc. at the Hot Springs VA to be able to substantiate the closure now. The number of veterans served by the Hot Springs VA hasn't decreased because veterans choose to go elsewhere but because those in favor of closing the Hot Springs VA have gradually over the past decade eliminated many of the services offered at Hot Springs. You bring all of those services back that were there in the late 1980's and lets see what the numbers are then. Sadly this fight has came too late in the game. Doesn't anyone in South Dakota care about us "little fish"? Just because we are a small community doesn't mean we aren't worthy. Many people, including myself, moved to Hot Springs because it is a beautiful and peaceful town but employment opportunities are limited and to take away one more facility (not to mention there has also been discussion of moving the South Dakota Veterans Home) is just another nail in the coffin. Just one more of the the unfortunate problems with our government is there aren't enough high paying jobs, health insurance benefits for all, and that the people who make the final decisions quite frankly don't care if we aren't the voting majority!!!!!!

The Congressional delegation is just worried about votes! The need to be worried about taxpayers money....my tax money! The VA proposed plan would cost an estimated $148.6 million over 30 years, compared to $258 million for an alternative to renovate the existing VA facilities in Hot Springs! The study estimated an ANNUAL net savings of $26 million! Saving taxpayers dollars is what the Tea Party (under Kristi Noem's leadership) was built upon! We TeaPublicans are going to look for every way to cut and cut and cut...and that includes the so called sacred cow in Hot Springs! Things are going to change after the next election....you can bet on it! We TeaPublicans ARE taking back America....and we are taking back this Hot Springs VA facility too!

Can't close a post office anywhere. Can't close the VA. Force me to drive subsidized ethanol. Want another huge farm welfare bill. Our delegation is lying when they tell us they are serious about fixing our deficit problems. It is all talk.

You call the Hot Springs complex "aging." The main building is an architectural masterpiece built to last like the grand buildings of Europe, 500 years or more. Take a tour, RCJ staff.
