WASHINGTON - The men and women of Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling and Joint Base Andrews honored those who lost their lives as the result of terrorist attacks 10 years ago during a 9/11 remembrance ceremony, Sept. 11 at JBAB.
The official party was led in with the sound of "Amazing Grace" from bagpipes followed by the U.S. Navy and Air Force honor guard members presenting the colors.
Chaplain Lt. Col. Mark Campbell, JBAB, delivered the invocation, "May this service accomplish its part to help us remember and to heal. Remembrance is essential; healing is a must. When we feel the pain, help us to remember that healing also comes."
Those in attendance remembered the events that occurred and recalled the actions military members took.
"Following the events of that fateful day 10 years ago, our nation and its people sprung into action," said Col. Kenneth Rizer, 11th Wing commander. "Less than one month after 9/11, our armed forces and allies launched operation Enduring Freedom. Through 10 long years of combat, we've seen incredible sacrifice, bravery and service from our military personnel, their families and our countrymen."
A moment of silence honoring the losses sustained Sept. 11, 2001 was followed by the ringing of the ceremonial bell. The playing of "Taps" concluded the moment of silence.
"So many lives lost, so many people's lives affected," said Navy Capt. Anthony Calandra, JBAB commander. "But in horror, great good arose; our country came together like never before and heroism took center stage. They succeeded in bringing us together and for the next 10 years this country rededicated itself to the phrase, 'liberty and justice for all' because 'all' is completely inclusive."
