HCS honors distinguished alum Sgt. Toby Cook

Third Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division Special Troops Battalion commander, Lt. Col. Glenn R. Bollinger III makes a few remarks after being named one of the 2012 Hardin County School’s Distinguished Alumni. The event took place at the Historic Downtown Theater on Aug. 30. Bollinger, a 1987 North Hardin High School graduate was honored at the event for his distinguished military career after graduating from the Hardin County School system.

FORT KNOX, Ky. — Hardin County Schools hosted a Distinguished Alumni Luncheon, Aug. 30, at the Historic State Theater in downtown Elizabethtown. The luncheon was held to honor eight former graduates from various high schools in Hardin County who have distinguished themselves from their peers throughout their life.

One of the eight to be awarded is the Duke Brigades’ Lt. Col. Glenn Bollinger, a 1987 North Hardin High School graduate. Bollinger recently took command of the Special Troops Battalion within the 3rd Brigade Combat team, 1st Infantry Division.

During the event, schools superintendant Nannette Johnston highlighted Bollinger’s impressive and extensive military career, including deployment to Afghanistan as a Special Forces commander.

During an interview, Bollinger commented a little on what it was like going to North Hardin High School. He said he felt the education and experience he received from high school helped set him up for success.

“As a Special Forces leader, life can be challenging,” said Bollinger. “The never quit attitude that was fostered in me as a teenager has endured all hardships.”

Bollinger admitted that he’s not the type to seek out the spotlight but prefers the life of a quiet professional instead.

“I’m not a public person,” said Bollinger. ”I consider myself a humble servant to the Nation, no better than any other citizen.”

After receiving his award, he thanked his sister for submitting his name to be nominated, and also thanked the school board for choosing him to be one of this year’s honorees.

He said during the interview that he didn’t accept this honor and award solely for himself.

“I’m accepting this honor as a tribute to those that helped me reach my goals,” said Bollinger. “My friends and coaches were like extended family members and they helped shape me to meet the challenges of being an adult.”
