  1. Earlier this year, I wrote a letter with 103 of my colleagues to Ambassador Susan Rice, which encouraged her to urge the United Nations to take responsibility for the cholera crisis in Haiti. As cholera was brought to Haiti due to the acti...
ons of the UN, I believe that it is imperative for the UN to now act decisively to control the cholera epidemic. UN authorities should work with Haiti’s government and the international community to confront and, ultimately, eliminate this deadly disease from Haiti and the rest of the island of Hispaniola. A failure to act will not only lead to countless more deaths: it will undermine the crucial effort to reconstruct Haiti and will pose a permanent public health threat to the populations of neighboring nations.

  3. My Democratic colleagues in Michigan's congressional delegation and I have made a friendly wager with Leader Pelosi: If the Tigers win, Leader Pelosi will supply the delegation with an assortment of San Francisco chocolates. If the Giants win, the Michigan Members will provide the following to the Leader with an assortment of Michigan made products. Just like the auto industry, the Tigers are roaring back to the World Series! Go Tigers!
  4. The Supreme Court Justices were right to deny review of this case. Ohio’s attempt to involve the Supreme Court, just three weeks away from an election, was simply wrong for voters in the state. The attempts by lawmakers and elected official...
s in Ohio to block the right to vote have been troubling. However, as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision, I hope that the Ohio Secretary of State will redirect his efforts and affirm to all Ohio voters that his office and the state will work to educate and provide access to all who intend to vote in this election.

  5. Today, the Social Security Administration announced that the program’s cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will increase seniors’ monthly benefits by 1.7 percent next year.

Unfortunately, there are some people in Washington want to change t...
he COLA so that Social Security provides fewer benefits. Instead of discussing ways to cut benefits, we should be improving the COLA so that it more accurately reflects seniors’ high medical costs.

I will oppose any effort to cut Social Security benefits, which have been earned through a lifetime of hard work.

  7. I am happy to announce that the Economic Development Administration has awarded the Southeast Michigan Community Alliance (SEMCA) with a federal grant funded by the Advanced Manufacturing Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge to support...
and advance the creation of manufacturing jobs and small business activities in Southeast Michigan.

Through this project, clusters of small and medium sized manufacturing firms and businesses will now have the opportunity to grow, collaborate and better understand their value chains. This will lead to the development of new products for new markets through research and modeling. This critical investment for the state of Michigan will provide an opportunity for strengthening regional economic development opportunities, creating sustainable jobs, fostering small businesses, and building an advanced skilled manufacturing workforce throughout our state. I congratulate SEMCA on its receipt of this award.
