Southwest wildfire crews join Hurricane Sandy cleanup effort

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -

About 125 southwest wildfire workers from Arizona and New Mexico were sent over the last five days to help with Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

Five 20-person crews, two from Arizona and three from New Mexico, were sent to New Jersey for initial briefing before being assigned to specific locations in the state.

Other wildfire workers will be assigned to New York, New Jersey or Massachusetts to give support to local emergency response agencies, assist at FEMA facilities and help with the needs of communities affected by the storm.

A five member team of the Veteran's Fire Corps joined a 20-person saw crew from the Coconino and Kaibab National Forests that left Sunday for New Jersey.

The Veterans Fire Corp Team was asked to help because of their experience as firefighters and their experience with prescribed burning projects over the summer and fall.

Wildfire suppression crews and incident management teams typically help clear downed trees from roads so that local responders can conduct search and rescue missions. They also help assist FEMA facilities that provide water and provide communications equipment for local emergency response teams.
