Georgia Jobs for Veterans Career Expo

The Governor's Office of Workforce Development and the Georgia Department of Labor will host the Georgia Jobs for Veterans Career Expo on Thursday, November 8th, from 10 AM - 2 PM at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. The expo will be an opportunity for veterans and employers to come together over jobs - real jobs that may be a great match for a veteran's experiences and skills. Veterans will be able to meet employers and learn about their hiring needs, and employers will be able to conduct interviews onsite.

Georgia has one of the highest numbers of veterans returning from service in Iraq and Afghanistan. While the national unemployment rate for post 9/11 veterans has fallen consistently and modestly, but definitively, throughout 2012 - there is still much work to be done. Too many veterans continue to struggle to find meaningful work in Georgia and nationwide.

"Finding workforce solutions for veterans is an important part of what we do," said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. "Georgia's veterans have selflessly given of themselves through their military service, and we at the Georgia DOL, along with the Governor's Office of Workforce Development and our many workforce partners, are committed to doing all we can to ensure veterans access the full range of resources and services available to them - to help them find jobs and build rewarding careers in the civilian workforce. Veterans can be great assets for Georgia's businesses, and the need for giving back to the men and woman of our Armed Forces has never been as critical as it is today."

Sometimes there is a relatively direct correlation between a military job and a civilian job - for example, security work. Oftentimes, however, the connection is not as clear, and some skills "translation" is needed. Veterans must be able to communicate their skills to potential employers clearly and concisely, in both a résumé and a job interview. In addition to helping veterans "civilianize" their military jobs (i.e., translate their military experience and skills to the civilian job market) at the expo, several other workshops will be available on topics such as Using Social Media in Your Job Search, Enhancing Interviewing Effectiveness, and Crafting a Dynamic Résumé. Younger veterans who enlisted right out of high school and are stepping in front of an employer for the first time may need the full range of services available at the career expo to understand how to best communicate the value they can bring to an employer.

Approximately 300 employers and 50 community organizations are scheduled to participate in the Georgia Jobs for Veterans Career Expo. While the event is designed for veterans, it is open to the general public. All attendees should dress appropriately for a job interview, and should bring a current résumé. There is no cost to participate.
