Virginia National Guard winding down storm recovery operations throughout the state

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia National Guard is winding down most of its storm recovery operations through the state.

Officials said Wednesday that most personnel have moved into the recovery phase. The only personnel still actively engaged in missions are operating on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

By the end of the day Wednesday, officials expected to have about 75 Guard personnel still on duty.

The Guard had more than 650 Guard personnel staged and ready to respond at the height of the storm.

Virginia Guard aviators flew Gov. Bob McDonnell and other state officials on an aerial tour of the Eastern Shore on Wednesday. Other soldiers conducted numerous high water rescue missions. Other personnel were based at the Joint Operations Center in Sandston and supporting sustainment operations out of Fort Pickett.
