Dear Friend,
Every year on this day we pause to honor and extend our heartfelt appreciation to our veterans and their families for their service to our great country. I have the distinct privilege to represent more than 100,000 veterans in the Second Congressional District of Virginia. That is more men and women in uniform than any other district in the country!
As a second generation Marine, I have a deep appreciation for those who wear our nation's uniform. I do not know why Providence calls upon some to give so much, and for some to give all. I do know with certainty what we owe to those who serve.
The veterans in our district truly know the meaning of the word ‘duty’ and today we acknowledge our duty to them. We must provide for our veterans and their families, give them opportunities to find jobs after they have served, and firmly protect their health. I am pleased to have signed on to legislation preventing any increases in TRICARE fees and have led in the fight to stop sequestration, which could impact our veterans' benefits. Additionally, my bill 'More for Vets; Less for Corporate Jets' would reform the tax code to provide incentives for businesses that hire veterans and wounded warriors.
As we thank our heroes in our district today, I would like to particularly thank my father, Ike Rigell, an Iwo Jima Marine, who has taught me the importance of duty, honor, and service. (See a great picture of Ike below!)
May God continue to bless our veterans, their families, and the United States of America.
Mindful that I work for you, I remain
Yours in Freedom,
Scott Rigell
Scott's dad, Ike - an Iwo Jima Marine,
is farthest on the right.
