We're looking for heroes.

For the fifth year, The Plain Dealer will profile Northeast Ohioans whose selfless contributions make the region a better place to live.

Last year's heroes included a man who has devoted decades to heading off gang violence, a 100-year-old woman whose crocheted creations comfort others and a high school senior dedicated to protecting the environment.

There were an avid gardener who beautifies her community, two former refugees who now help others resettle here and a retired teacher who missed her students so much that she returned to school as a volunteer.

Do you know someone who deserves to be honored in 2012? We're looking for people who often work behind the scenes with no fanfare. Tell us what makes your nominee special and what he or she has contributed to the community.

A panel of Plain Dealer reporters and editors will select the winners. The community heroes will be profiled in stories published at the end of this year and in early January.

Send your nominations to heroes@plaind.com or mail a nomination to Heroes, c/o The Plain Dealer Newsroom, 1801 Superior Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44114. Please include your phone number. The deadline for nominations is Oct. 15.
