An additional 112 AmeriCorps members have deployed as part of the CNCS reponse to Hurricane Sandy, bringing the total of national service members on the ground to 877. These members are serving in six states and include the 41 FEMA Corps teams previously deployed. An additional 900 members standby for deployment.

Thursday, November 1, 10:00 a.m.:

765 national service members will be in affected states by Wednesday, with nearly 1,000 more on standby for assignments. These members include AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and 41 of 42 FEMA Corps teams. Their duties include assisting with shelter operations, call centers, debris removal, and mass care in response to Hurricane Sandy.

Wednesday, October 31, 8:30 p.m.:

457 AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members have deployed to assist with shelter operations, call centers, debris removal, and mass carein response to Hurricane Sandy in Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. In addition, approximately 157 FEMA Corps members are in five states to support emergency response operations. More than 900 national service members are on stand-by for deployment.

Monday, October 29, 8:30 p.m.:

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has deployed 121 AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members to assist with shelter operations and call centers in response to Hurricane Sandy in five states.

Of these, 30 AmeriCorps members are supporting shelter operations and mass care under the authority of the New Jersey State Administration; 56 AmeriCorps NCCC members are supporting American Red Cross shelters in Delaware, New Jersey, and New York; 20 AmeriCorps members are supporting shelter operations and the United Way 211 Call Center in Middletown, Rhode Island; and 15 Senior Corps volunteers are serving in the Bristol, Barrington, and Tiverton shelters in Rhode Island.

Currently, more than 290 FEMA Corps members are prepositioned across six states to support FEMA emergency response operations in communities impacted by the storm. In total, more than 809 national service members are on stand-by for deployment once weather clears.

Sunday, October 28, 10:00 a.m.:

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has deployed 106 AmeriCorps members to assist with shelter operations and other preparation activities in response to Hurricane Sandy. Of these, 30 AmeriCorps members are supporting shelter operations and mass care under the authority of the New Jersey State Administration.

76 are supporting American Red Cross shelters in Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia. Currently, more than 290 FEMA Corps members are prepositioned across eight states to support FEMA Emergency Response Operations once the storm impacts affected communities. An additional 145 FEMA Corp members have been placed on stand-by for possible deployment post-landfall. In total, more than 520 national service members are on stand-by for possible deployment, and 400 additional members remain on call.

Saturday, October 27, 1:00 p.m.:

70 AmeriCorps members are deploying to preparation activities in response to Hurricane Sandy. Of these members, 30 AmeriCorps members are supporting shelter operations and mass care under the authority of the New Jersey State Administration and 40 will deploy to American Red Cross shelters in Delaware and Virginia. All 42 FEMA Corps teams and more than 400 national service members – AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps NCCC, Senior Corps – are ready to deploy.

Friday, October 26, 6:00 p.m.:

As Hurricane Sandy continues moving toward the Atlantic Coast, the Corporation for National and Community Service announced that more than 250 national service members are on standby to deploy as part of the federal response effort.

CNCS is coordinating with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, the American Red Cross, and state and local authorities. CNCS is part of a local, state and national effort. Once deployed, these members would do volunteer management, shelter operations, case management and warehouse management.

“Hurricane Sandy is a powerful storm and anyone living in the projected impact zone should take precautions now,” said Kelly DeGraff, Director of Disaster Services for CNCS. “If you aren't sure what to do, visit Ready.gov or download the American Red Cross mobile application for steps you can take to better protect yourself and your family.”

DeGraff said the national service response includes AmeriCorps grantees, AmeriCorps NCCC teams, and Senior Corps volunteers. State service commissions are also encouraging residents to pre-register to volunteer as part of response and recovery efforts.

The agency is also working with FEMA to determine deployment options for FEMA Corps. FEMA Corps is a new unit of service corps members within AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps members launched this year that is solely devoted to disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.

DeGraff said the agency is assessing needs and deployment possibilities through CNCS state offices and State Service Commissions along the Atlantic Coast. It is also participating in FEMA daily briefings, calls with National VOAD and the American Red Cross.
