Capuano Introduces Resolution to Teach Children About Safety
July 28, 2005
Congressman Capuano introduced a resolution encouraging public establishments such as schools and museums to display the "Knowing My Eight Rules for Safety" poster, created by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. This valuable tool is used to help teach children how to protect themselves and avoid danger.
Congressman Capuano is working with one of his constituents, Bob Curley of Somerville, MA to expand access to this poster. Eight years ago in Cambridge, Mass., Bob's 10 year-old son, Jeffrey, was kidnapped and murdered. Since that tragic day, Bob has become a tireless advocate for children. With local activist Dan Moniz, he successfully fought to pass legislation in Massachusetts that would call for the posting of "Knowing My Eight Rules for Safety" in schools and other public places where children gather.
The resolution commends establishments that are currently displaying the poster and encourages others to follow suit. The poster advises children to check first with parents or an adult in charge before going anywhere, to talk to a trusted person if something is wrong and to learn important telephone numbers in the event of an emergency.
"This poster displays common sense tips for children and their parents. I encourage all officials at schools and other places where children gather to place it in a prominent location and use it as a tool to talk about safety," stated Congressman Capuano.
