  1. I had the pleasure this afternoon of visiting with seniors in Soldier, Kansas. We discussed everything from the federal budget crisis to Medicare. Thank you for having me today!

  2. The slight uptick in today’s jobs numbers, is a stark reminder of just how far we have to go. There are still 12.3 million unemployed Americans, and those dropping out of the labor force have outnumbered new employees by almost 7 to 1 after 4 years. Conditions are not improving quickly enough; it is time to pursue a different economic path.

  3. Fantastic work being done by Kyle Riding, assistant professor of civil engineering at Kansas State University. Railroads are so important to the Kansas economy. More than 5,000 freight railroad employees work in Kansas, and the Department of Commerce found that every freight rail job could support up to 4.5 jobs in the greater economy.
  4. I am proud to be a member of the Ways and Means Committee, which passed trade agreements with Colombia, South Korea and Panama in the past year after other members of Congress had worked on them for six years. One in 15 jobs in Kansas depends on trade, and Kansas export sales totaled $9.93 billion in 2010.
  5. My staff weathered the storm in DC and they are back in the office today! Thank you for your patience. So glad to report everyone is safe!
  6. There are 46.7 million Americans dependent on food stamps today, and at 15 percent of the population, that is more than any other time in history. This is why programs like the Kansas Walmart State Giving Program are so important.
  7. Best of luck!! Go get em, Vikings!
Good luck to the Seaman Boy's Soccer team, who won the 5A Regional Championship last Friday and are playing in the State Quarterfinals today!

  10. Speaking at the Walmart Supercenter in Fort Scott, Kansas. The Kansas Walmart State Giving Program is donating $50,000 to the Fort Scott Beacon Food Pantry, which will be used to purchase food throughout the year. This is especially important in this weak economy, where folks are worried about the price of groceries and putting food on the table.

  11. I have asked my staff in Washington, DC, to stay safely at home and prepare for Hurricane Sandy. However, please feel free to reach out to my offices in Topeka, Kansas and Pittsburg if you need anything, as both are open . I'm looking forward to being in Fort Scott and Pittsburg today!

  12. My visit to the Herzog Asphalt plant in Elwood today will air on Kansas First News affiliates tonight. Tune in to Topeka's Channel 27 at 6pm and 6:30pm.
  13. Today’s disappointing GDP report reinforces that the president’s policies have put the current economy in last place compared to other post-World War II recoveries that lasted more than a year.

  14. I had such a great time visiting Herzog Asphalt this morning in Elwood (Doniphan County). For nearly 40 years, Herzog has been providing essential services to the rail industry. In a struggling economy, it is important to recognize how rail is vital for the agriculture and manufacturing sectors. More than 5,000 freight railroad employees work in Kansas, and the Department of Commerce found that every freight rail job could support up to 4.5 jobs in the greater economy.

  16. Working in a Congressional office can be a great way to get insight into the legislative process, make contacts in Washington, D.C. , and meet a lot of great people. An internship also provides an excellent opportunity to see Congress in action. Applications for Spring 2013 are due November 1st!
  17. Here visiting with Brian Pekarek, the superintendent, along with Heather, who is a teacher for the program.
