The overall mission of the Department of Public Safety is to improve the quality of life for North Carolinians by reducing crime and enhancing public safety.

DPS employees supervise offenders in prison, in juvenile detention centers and in community supervision. State troopers enforce North Carolina highway laws, and Emergency Management personnel help plan for and recover from man-made or natural disasters.

Law Enforcement The state's four main law enforcement agencies: State Highway Patrol, State Capitol Police, State Bureau of Investigation and Alcohol Law Enforcement, are ready to respond quickly to meet the public's diverse safety needs.

Emergency Management Working with state and local partners to help North Carolinians effectively prepare for, respond to, recover from and mitigate against all hazards and disasters.

Adult Correction Adults convicted of crimes in NC serve sentences ranging from community probation to active prison time. After prison, a period of post-release supervision helps offenders transition more successfully back to the community.

Juvenile Justice Juvenile Justice staff, who provide services to children younger than 16 who commit crimes in NC, are committed to the reduction and prevention of juvenile delinquency by effectively intervening, educating and treating youth in order to strengthen families and increase public safety.
