News: Beast takes undefeated record into playoffs

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – The 1st Marine Logistics Group Beast football team overcame an early 16-point deficit to defeat the 11th Marine Regiment Cannon Cockers 34-28 here, Oct. 15.
The Beast completed the regular season with an 8-0 record and secured the number one seed for the playoffs, which begins next week.
Before the start of the second quarter, Marvin Hill, head coach for the Beast, tried to motivate the team by letting them know they still had three more quarters to play.
Down 16-0, the 1st MLG answered with two touchdown passes by quarterback Matthew Petree to bring the score to 16-14 with 7:24 left in the second quarter. The first touchdown was a 16-yard pass to wide receiver Tony Ortiz and a 60-yard pass to wide receiver Luke Boyd.
Before halftime, the Cannon Cockers answered with an 8-yard touchdown pass to make the score 22-14.
The Cannon Cockers returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown to stretch the score to 28-14.
On the ensuing kickoff, returner Charles Robinson returned the ball for a touchdown. Kicker Christian Proud missed the extra-point to make the score 28-20.
Petree found wide receiver Chris Warder for a touchdown pass in the third quarter. The Beast would failed on the two-point conversion to make the score 28-26.
With 4:04 left in the fourth quarter, Beast running back Thaddaeus Haney sealed the victory with a 19-yard touchdown run. Petree tacked on the two-point conversion with a run to make the final score 34-28.
The Beast hopes to continue its winning streak as they enter the playoffs with the top seed in the Camp Pendleton Football League.
