Congressman Lungren Applauds Secretary Chertoff

DHS to Create New Cybersecurity Position & Telecomm Chief

(Washington, DC)— Congressman Dan Lungren (R-Gold River), Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Economic Security, Infrastructure Protection, and Cybersecurity, lauds the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff, for the creation of the position of Assistant Secretary for Cyber and Telecommunications Security.  The position will report directly to the Under Secretary for Preparedness in an effort to centralize the coordination of efforts to protect technological infrastructure.

“As we move forward, one of the most important aspects of national security exists in cyberspace.  By creating this important position, DHS is making progress toward securing our nation’s cyber-infrastructure.  Protecting the integrity of our cyber-resources is an urgent priority as technology is the backbone for our nation’s critical infrastructure, including health, transportation, production and government functions,” said Congressman Lungren.  “I am pleased that Secretary Chertoff has taken in full account the views of Congress regarding the importance of cybersecurity and our telecommunications infrastructure.”

In April of this year, Congressman Lungren held a hearing regarding Congresswomen Lofgren’s H.R. 285, the Department of Homeland Security Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2005.
