PITTSTON – On the 70th anniversary of the day he enlisted in the U.S. Army, Louis J. Roman of Pittston finally received some of the medals he earned during World War II.

U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, PA-11, presented several long overdue medals to the 88-year-old veteran Wednesday morning in Pittston.

Mr. Roman served as a gunner on bombers in World War II. He earned the Air Medal with two Bronze Stars; the American Campaign Medal; the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars; the Honorable Service Lapel Pin (also called the “Ruptured Duck”); and the World War II Victory Medal.

Rep. Barletta presented the medals to Mr. Roman after the dedication of the post office in Pittston in honor of fallen Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Joshua D. Miller.

“Mr. Roman waited a very long time for his medals, and I’m proud to present them to him on the anniversary of his enlistment,” Rep. Barletta said. “Wednesday was a day of heroes for me. These men made extraordinary sacrifices, both abroad and at home. They certainly deserve to be recognized and remembered.”
