MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - From the beginning of their military careers, Marines have the core values of honor, courage and commitment instilled in their hearts. It is those values that inspire Lance Cpl. Joseph F. Stabile, an avionics technician with Marine Transport Squadron 1, to do his best while working on the flight line and during his personal time.
Stabile said he enjoys troubleshooting electrical issues on the squadron’s HH-46E Sea Knight helicopters affectionately referred to as “Pedro.” He is mainly responsible for repairing wires and computer components.
“It is vital that we keep the aircraft maintained, so we can fulfill our search and rescue role,” said Stabile.
Being part of a search and rescue squadron inspires Stabile to help others when he is off duty.
While headed to Myrtle Beach on liberty Aug. 17, he witnessed an accident on Highway 17. Just after impact, one of the vehicles involved caught fire. Stabile said he quickly ran to the car to provide assistance to a woman trapped inside the burning car. He was not able to get her door open, but directed her out of the vehicle to safety.
“I always put myself in others’ shoes,” he said. “If I was in a dangerous situation, I would want someone to help me.”
