A Brighter Future for America Begins in our Community

Dear Friend,

America’s future remains bright, but we must reform our current trends in order to realize that future. Our long term debt problem looks a lot like the problems being faced by European nations whose spending has far outpaced the productivity of their economies. In the near term, the looming tax hikes will further siphon capital out of our economy at the precise time that more growth is needed.

We cannot expect our nation’s economic problems to be solved through central government, top down approaches. Growth will occur first in our local communities and small businesses, and then expand throughout our country, if we provide the tools and solutions to achieve this goal.

I was heartened over the past few days as I had the opportunity to witness the results of investment in our community. Nemours Children's Hospital recently opened its new facilities here in Central Florida and is planning on hiring hundreds of local residents. This success story didn't require much from the federal government, yet it will generate much good for our community. This is the type of local, community-based growth that America needs.

As we work to resolve our current problems, we must not forget to secure investments in our future. I was privileged to take part in the opening day celebration of City Year Orlando. City Year is a great example of an idea, generated by private citizens who saw a need, that has worked to put at risk kids in our public school system on the right track. City Year leverages some grant money from the federal government to gain local and corporate sponsors. Washington produces cookie cutter programs with an assembly line mentality. These programs often disregard the varying needs of people in the different places that the programs are intended to serve. In reality, communities know best what they need, and City Year is a prime example of how we can reform government and continue to see needs met in our communities.

In order for the necessary reforms to be put in place, we need leaders willing to work with others regardless of their differences in opinion. We need leaders that will take action, find solutions that are community-focused, and work with the next generation in mind. This path will position our country to thrive economically and to grow with the spirit that draws us together as Americans.

We can experience a rebirth of our future. For the sake of our kids and grandkids, let us do our part to leave them a brighter future that begins in our community.

Your servant,
Daniel Webster
Member of Congress
