Rep Walberg Supports Line-Item Veto And Budget Transparency

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representative Tim Walberg voted in support of H.R. 3521, the Expedited Line-Item Veto and Rescissions Act, and H.R. 3581, the Budget and Accounting Transparency Act.  Both of these bills will cut wasteful spending, help reduce the nation’s debt and are part of a larger package of budget process reforms under consideration by the House.

H.R. 3521 will give the President an additional tool to cut wasteful spending. Within 45 days of the enactment of an appropriations bill, the President may send specific line-items back to Congress for an up-or-down vote on whether to drop funding for these items. All savings would go towards paying down the deficit.   H.R. 3521 passed 254-173.

H.R. 3581 will increase transparency and accuracy in budgeting for federal credit programs, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the publication of budget-justification materials.  H.R. 3581 passed 245-180 vote.

“Not only should Washington stop spending as much as it has been, but it should also honest with taxpayers about how much it is spending.  These pieces of legislation will reduce spending, help shrink our nation’s debt, and bring transparency to the budget process. Though the Senate has yet to pass a budget in over 1,000 days, the House will continue to support policies to help put Washington’s fiscal house in order so our economy can grow and create jobs over the long-term,” stated Congressman Walberg following the vote.

Both bills passed with bipartisan support.
