      This England team (officially representing GB but all except one of the squad were English, and as can be seen from the photo they wore England jerseys) won the gold medal, beating Denmark in a repeat of the 1908 final. More info at Wikipedia.

      Interesting to see that they didn't all wear matching shorts and socks. Presumably only the jerseys were supplied to them officially.

      Bain's caption actually reads: "ENGLISH FOOTBALL TEAM." LOC appears to be attempting a TransAtlantic translation.

      Wystan: Thanks for noticing the correct caption on the negative. The source of captions for these are actually Bain's catalog cards, so perhaps the card reads "soccer." We'll change the title to the more accurate version "football" next time we update.
