H.R. 6016 is expected to be considered on the House floor on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, under suspension of the rules, requiring a two-thirds majority vote for passage.  This legislation was introduced by Rep. Kevin Brady (D-PA) on July 30, 2010. 

The bill would direct the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct an investigation and audit of the operations of the fund created by BP to compensate individuals affected by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The bill would also direct GAO to conduct an ongoing independent investigation and audit of the operations of the fund created by BP to compensate persons affected by the Gulf oil spill, as those operations take place to determine their effectiveness.  The bill would grant the GAO Subpoena powers in order to conduct the investigation.

Lastly, the bill would express the sense of Congress that BP should fully cooperate with the Comptroller General to assure that the BP relief fund is accurately, expediently, and efficiently compensating Gulf coast victims of the BP oil spill for their losses; the costs incurred by the GAO to carry out this act should be reimbursed by BP.

On June 16, 2010, BP announced that it was establishing a $20 billion claims fund to satisfy all legitimate claims from people, businesses, and environmental and natural resources affected by the disaster.
