Shoe polish box from the FF Dalley Co.; Frederick Fenner Dalley (d. 1884) was a Canadian businessman who ran a drugstore in Hamilton ONT, before setting up a factory to make shoe polish and other products in the 1850s. The business continued under his name and his sons' stewardship into the 1900s, making ink, baking powder, dye, flavorings, and yes, shoe polish. In 1925, the company was sold to Shineola.

It's worth reading the Wikipedia article on Shinola, apparently penned by a humorist.

Priceless vehicle built from scrounged material: finger jointed wooden shipping box, recycled lumber, metal wheels from a junked baby carriage, and rope & screw eye steering. Real American ingenuity!

    Absolutely...real Americana!!! Luv it!!!

However, despite Bain's (and LOC's) caption, this appears to be an urban sidewalk, curb (kerb) and gutter -- NOT a playground.

This might be the neighborhood playground.

Close to noon. Their shadows are small, and right underneath them.

I made one of these a a kid using the wheels off of my sister's stroller. My parents were very unhappy with me-an understatement. I only made one run because the wheels came off the front and I totaled the cart. I used a peach crate, as I remember.

Today lots of parents just go out and buy their kids a plastic, battery-operated vehicle for $500 without a second thought. No creativity, no effort, no individuality.

With no steering camber, a high center of gravity, and an underage driver on a public thoroughfare, this would have been one exciting ride.
