During the U.S. occupation of Vera Cruz, Mexico, 1914.

When I was young, an elderly neighbor in his 90s told me about being part of the invasion of Vera Cruz. He said he'd joined the Navy inspired by the recruiting poster "Join the Navy and See the World". When he stormed ashore in Mexico he was narrowly missed by bullets, and the reality of the situation hit him with sudden shock: "They are trying to kill ME!" He said he next realized that they live here and wondered "What am I doing here?" More than half a century later he added, "I still haven't gotten a good answer to that question."
