Norwegian tennis player Anna Margarethe "Molla" Bjurstedt Mallory (1884-1959):

Apparently she's "the only woman other than Chris Evert to have won the U.S. Championships four consecutive times."

In New York in March, 1915 to play in the Women's National Indoor Tennis Tournament at the Seventh Regiment Armory (Park Avenue Armory), where this photo was probably taken. She won that year, the first of 8 such titles she would eventually win.

Something interesting about the brooch she is wearing in this photo, from her book "Tennis For Women" (1916):
"I suppose that I am very silly about tournament
play I am so superstitious. I make a wish when-
ever I see two white horses. I had great luck on the
night before the finals of the National Champion-
ships at Philadelphia. I was talking with Mrs.
Wightman, whom I was to play, when I saw a falling
star. There is nothing so lucky as wishing on a fall-
ing star. I made my wish, "I want to win the
    National." And I did.
Then, I have a Japanese brooch which I always
wear when I play; it is so ugly that I cannot wear it
at any other time. I am afraid to play without
    it. "

    pennylrichardsca and artolog:

Thank you for the information! I especially enjoy the story of her lucky 'ugly' brooch - and seeing it on her in the photo. Very nice detail! We will add more to the record when updating.
