Cravaack Amendment to Terminate Intrusive TSA "Naked" Body Imaging Passed by House Subcommittee

Washington, D.C. – Today, the House Homeland Security Committee Subcommittee on Transportation Security unanimously agreed to the Cravaack amendment to the TSA Authorization Act of 2011.  The amendment terminates the “naked,” full-body imaging practice currently employed by TSA on advanced imaging technology (AIT) machines.

Specifically, the Cravaack amendment would mandate the TSA install automated targeting recognition (ATR) software on all AIT machines within 90 days of enactment of the underlying bill.  ATR software produces a generic, stick figure outline of a person being screened.

“This amendment will protect Americans’ dignity and ensure, to the extent an AIT machine can, our nation’s transportation infrastructure remains secure,” said Rep. Cravaack.

Congressman Cravaack serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee – where he is Vice Chair of the Aviation Subcommittee – the Homeland Security Committee, and the Science, Space and Technology Committee. The 8th Congressional District covers 18 counties in Northeast Minnesota.
