Reaction of U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert to the President's Pick for U.S. Supreme Court Justice
05/26/09 Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL-13th) issued the following statement after President Obama announced his nomination of Sonia Sotomayor for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court:
“Unfortunately, as a Member of the House, I will not have the opportunity to vote on this nomination, as the Constitution gives that responsibility to Members of the Senate. However, as someone who once clerked for a judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals, I believe the most important thing is that she interprets the law and does not make the law. The Constitution gave that responsibly to Congress.”
Editor’s note: Biggert is a graduate of Stanford University and Northwestern University School of Law. She began her legal career as a clerk to the Honorable Luther M. Swygert, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit.
