(Washington, DC) – Responding to the news that close friend and colleague, Congressman Tom Lantos, has cancer of the esophagus, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (Oakland) issued the following statement:

“I am saddened by the news that Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Lantos has been diagnosed with cancer. My prayers are with him and his family.

“I’ve worked for years under his leadership on the Foreign Affairs committee and have grown to respect and admire him, especially while working closely on crafting our global HIV/AIDS policy.

“Chairman Lantos is a friend, a great human being and an extraordinary advocate for human rights.”
