A Memo on Jobs in Virginia's Fourth District
Posted by Randy | November 02, 2012
Today, the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics released its jobs report for the month of October.  According to the report, 171,000 were added to the economy; however, the unemployment rate rose from 7.8 percent to 7.9 percent.  I thought you would be interested in reading a jobs update for Virginia’s Fourth District.

There is a simple truth when it comes to job creation in America: real solutions create real growth that generates real jobs. In order to make this happen, government needs to get out of the way and provide the freedom for small businesses to work, earn, and achieve.

All across Virginia’s Fourth District, we have industries that are ripe for growth. The memo provides examples of how industries in Virginia have flourished when we’ve applied that simple truth. The case studies also show the potential for even more growth when government acts as an enabler rather than a barrier.

Companies across the 4th District are adding jobs, such as Rolls-Royce at Crosspointe Park in Prince George County, Capital One Financial Corp. in Chesterfield County and Sabra Dipping Company in Colonial Heights.

You can download the memo here or by clicking the report below. You can also view a text version on my website here.

The way I see it congressman, is that the incredibly arrogant, divisive and irresponsible allegiance to the Grover Norquist blackmail pledge of obstruction has deeply harmed this great nation. I have never witnessed such a blatant attempt to destroy the country through inaction in all my years. I cannot wait to cast my Virginia vote in the hopes that newly elected representatives will cooperate for the sake of the country. In a recent poll a whopping 80% of the country want their representatives to abandon widely discredited theories sir. The public isn't going to tolerate this anymore. I'm concerned that republicans simply cannot govern. They cannot even put an advertisement on television without making headlines that left furious Chrysler executives deeply offended by Mr. Romney's lies that were harming their company. How can a desperate public rely on this kind of representation? We've seen republicans horribly mismanage civil rights and wars - getting us out of Vietnam by helo from a rooftop, fail to manage the environment sensibly, fail to protect our homeland on September 11th, fail to capture Bin Laden, fail to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, fail to manage the Savings and Loan crises and then fail to learn that lesson. They failed to keep the government from shutting down, failed to even increase the minimum wage for 10 years. We have seem them fail to balance budgets, fail to regulate Wall Street, fail with supreme court nominees, fail to support women's health care needs, fail to control the nation's borders, fail in New Orleans, fail to reign in gun violence, and fail to help farmers during historic drought. They failed to protect privacy rights, failed to oversee banks and failed to protect a covert CIA agent. They failed allowing North Korea to explode a nuclear bomb, failed with no child left behind, failed college students, and cannot comprehend the significance of vanishing glaciers. They failed to address dramatic widening of the income gap, opposed tax cuts for the middle class, failed to step forward for the auto industry, and refused for over 20 years to adjust CAFE standards in the interest of energy efficiency. We cannot move forward as a nation Mr. Forbes unless representatives in the congress have as their guiding principle devotion to patriotic duty. Signing a ridiculous pledge for Grover Norquist is not patriotic, it is obstructionist and I would urge you to rescind your commitment to it as some of your colleagues have already done. The American people see this the way former Senator Simpson sees it, you do not belong in the congress if Norquist's pledge is more important to you than your country. It shocks me sir that as a representative in a district of significant military influence, that the pledge is more important to you than the ability to work with your colleages in genuine bi-partisan commitment. I hope that should the voters decide to return you to Washington for another term that we will see an end to the obstruction that you have been deeply associated with. I must say sir, that for over a year, you have stubbornly refused to pressure your leadership to even bring up for vote the Jobs bill. That is NOT acting in the interest of the country sir. You can decide to vote no, but obstructing the opportunity for all of the nation's people to have a voice is simply shameful. I challenge you sir, to publish a non-partisan poll question on your blog to gauge the feelings of voters regarding congressional obstruction. Just do it sir, show us something that would lead us to believe there is capacity to actually govern your country. The people won't place trust Romney or the GOP with a record of failure and 533 lies in 30 months (not including inbetween meals).

where is the massive military military humanitarian effort to help our fellow AMERICANS in the NE that we provided to Asia after the two tsunamis ? We have numerous military resources in the Norfolk area that could be utilized to help people dealing with the loss of heat, shelter, food, clothing, medical care etc. The ships could provide shelter, warm meals, medical care and shore power. In addition the Marines and Seabees could lend much needed assistance in clearing roads and setting up tents and providing food and water. These people are in desperate straits and need help immediately !

Two points I'd like to address in the memo. First, breaking dependency on foreign oil. Isn't one of the goals of the Keystone pipeline to export oil? I believe the petroleum industry has identified this as a reason for building the pipeline. To prevent this from happening, cancel the Keystone pipeline. Instead, build a refinery near the Canadian border (Montana, North Dakota etc.) and pipe the oil to this location. The main benefits to this would be: 1) The refinery could be built away from any environmentally sensitive areas 2) We’ll have increased refining capability not subject to gulf coast storms 3) We’ll diversify refining capabilities in case of a terrorist attack 4) Environmentally sensitive areas of the Midwest would not be vulnerable to spills or accidents Second point concerns the aircraft carrier move to Florida. You say no compelling security reasons were provided. Here’s a reason, if this place were attacked, a good way to disable the Atlantic fleet would be sinking a large tanker type vessel in the channel of the HRBT when a majority of the fleet is home. It would most likely take months to clear the channel giving our enemies significant control of the Atlantic. I hope you take these thoughts to heart and consider supporting them.
