Lamborn Blasts Fish & Wildlife Preble Decision

Today Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05) blasted the latest decision by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) to maintain the Preble’s meadow jumping mouse at its current status of federally protected.

“In a disappointing display of fealty to junk science, the FWS has proposed a rule to maintain the Preble mouse as a federally protected species in Colorado. FWS refuses to acknowledge that this supposed subspecies was originally listed based on measurements of only three specimens. Additionally, the original scientist who described this subspecies in 1953 went on record in 2004 rejecting the validity of the subspecies. I also requested a briefing with FWS on this matter before this ruling and they failed to provide one, further demonstrating their unwillingness to work with both sides on this issue.” – Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05)

Information regarding today’s proposed ruling by FWS:

  • Preble’s meadow jumping mouse will maintain its current status as federally protected in Colorado due to various factors regarding growth along the Front Range of Colorado
  • Beginning November 7, 2007 there will be a public comment period for input on this matter for 70 days
  • FWS final rule on this matter will be issued June 30, 2008

“This is a setback for Colorado, but fortunately, it is not the final word. I will continue to work vigorously at the federal level to convince FWS and the Department of Interior that this decision is sadly mistaken and harmful to the interests of Colorado. I urge all Coloradans to weigh in with FWS and make their voices heard on this issue before the final decision is made next June.” – Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05)
