Rehberg, House Vote to Keep Washington, D.C. On Target With the Second Amendment

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Montana’s Congressman, Denny Rehberg, today joined House Colleagues in passing The Second Amendment Enforcement Act which will require the Washington, D.C. local government to respect the Second Amendment rights of its citizens.  The bill passed with bipartisan support, 266-152.

“The Constitution doesn’t just guarantee the Second Amendment rights of people lucky enough to live in Montana,” said Rehberg, a member of the House Appropriations Committee who has earned an ‘A’ rating with the National Rifle Association.  “After the Supreme Court overturned Washington, D.C.’s outright ban on firearms as unconstitutional, the city council imposed draconian gun control laws that have made legally purchasing and registering a firearm virtually impossible.  Fortunately, the House had something to say about that.”

The Second Amendment Enforcement Act will repeal the District’s ban on semi-automatic handguns, repeal the requirement that firearms be disassembled or secured with a trigger lock in the home, and reform the current D.C. registration system that requires multiple visits to police headquarters, ballistics testing, fingerprinting, a written test and limited registration to one handgun per 90 days.

“The Supreme Court made the right decision in D.C. v. Heller, and it’s up to Congress to prevent the continued denial of Constitutional Rights to District residents,” said Rehberg.  “I hope that the Senate will act promptly to send this bill to the President.”
