All US Troops to be Out of Iraq by December 31st

On Friday, President Obama announced that all U.S. troops in Iraq will be withdrawn by the end of December 2011. Like many Americans, I am eager to bring our troops home to their families, but I worry that rushing the withdrawal of troops could diminish the progress that we have made in the region. Iraq still faces threats, and we must make sure that the government is stable before we pull out of the area completely. We must fulfill our commitment to the Iraqi people and complete the mission that began close to a decade ago. The work performed by our servicemen and women in Iraq is second to none, and I thank them for their service and dedication.

Post Office Meetings with Local Officials

Last week, I met with officials from the United States Postal Service (USPS) to discuss the organization’s financial situation, potential post office closings in the 19th District, and the Abilene Mail Processing Facility. The financial situation of the Postal Service makes it very clear that major changes to its business model must be implemented to balance its budget and ensure solvency for years to come. The USPS officials assured me that they will continue to provide service to all customers throughout the 19th District.  They also assured me that, as of this time, no decisions have been made affecting service to anyone in the 19th District.   It is imperative that all stakeholder concerns are taken into account, and all decisions must be equitable and based on sound facts and figures. I will continue to monitor this situation closely, meet with USPS officials and ensure that all voices are heard.

Military Academy Service Nominations

As a U.S. Congressman, I am privileged to nominate high school students in the 19th District of Texas to any of the five U.S. service academies. Service academies can provide excellent educations and open the door to many rewarding opportunities. Any student interested in applying to one of the nation’s service academies should talk to their parents and their high school counselor. If you or someone you know would like to apply to attend any of the five service academies, please contact Mary Whistler in my Lubbock office for more information, and download the application here.
