  4. On Tuesday from 3:30-5pm, I will be hosting an Open House at my new office in Punta Gorda, located in the Historic Courthouse at 226 Taylor Street, Suite 230. At 4pm, I will be sworn into the 113th Congress in a local ceremony, followed by ...light refreshments. I hope you can join me to visit the new office, witness the swearing-in, meet some of my staff, and share your ideas with me. 5. Today I was honored to be sworn into the 113th Congress, taking this oath of office: “I, Tom Rooney, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.” I look forward to serving the people of Florida's 17th district.
  6. Today is the last day I will represent Palm Beach, Martin, St.Lucie, and Hendry Counties. Tomorrow I will be sworn into the 113th Congress for the newly drawn 17th Congressional District. While I am excited to add several new counties along with four counties I already serve, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to those constituents I am losing. You placed your faith and confidence... in me to represent you in our nation's Capitol in 2008 and again in 2010. And for that I am truly humbled and honored. Even though the political climate in Washington has been most divisive I have tried to represent you the best I could. Former Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill once famously said that "all politics is local." I always tried to keep your interests in mind for every vote. I can't tell you how remarkable it is every time I walk into the Capitol building, I look up at that dome and can't help but feel incredibly lucky to be one of very few men and women in our history who have ever been able to call themselves a United States Representative. So to those of you from Labelle to Clewiston, Wellington to Gardens to Jupiter, from Stuart to Port Saint Lucie and Ft. Pierce, and to my hometown in the Village of Tequesta, I wish you God speed. I will never, ever forget the opportunity you gave me to represent you in public service. I'm sure I will have the chance to see you down the road. This is not goodbye. Tara and I and the boys will continue to keep you in our prayers. Keep the faith - TomSee More
  7. Tara and I join the nation in mourning the passing of General Norman Schwarzkopf. Here in our community, General Schwarzkopf will be remembered not just for his patriotism and his heroic military career, but also for his many charitable works in Hillsborough County. Godspeed General.
  8. From my family to yours, we wish you a Merry Christmas. A special thank you to our men and women in uniform who cannot be with their families today for your service and sacrifice.
  9. I'm very relieved that former Marine Jon Hammar has been released from prison in Mexico and will be with his family for Christmas. I joined with Rep. Ileana Ros Lehtinen to urge the State Department to increase pressure on the Mexican government to secure his release.
  10. Tonight the House is voting to establish a Commission to Eliminate Childhood Abuse and Neglect Fatalities (HR 6655). As a former CEO of a home for abused and neglected children, I’ve seen firsthand the tragedy of children being abused by those who are supposed to protect them, and I’m glad we’re taking this step to protect our children.
  11. The unclassified, independent review into the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11 is available here: http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/202446.pdf. The report notes that, "Systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies at senior levels within two bureaus of the State Department resulted in a Special Mission security posture that was inadequate for Benghazi and grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place."
  12. My prayers go out to the people of Hawaii and the family of Senator Daniel Inouye, who leaves behind a proud legacy as a Senator and a decorated World War II hero.
  13. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families in Connecticut.
  14. What I'm reading: The EPA has accepted Florida's numeric nutrient standards. My goal throughout this long process has been to bring all parties to the table and reach an agreeable solution, and I'm pleased that we were finally able to do so.... These standards will protect Florida's environment without being overly burdensome or costing our state much-needed jobs. http://www2.highlandstoday.com/business/agri-leader/2012/dec/12/lrnewso1-florida-wins-epa-decision-ar-580552/See More
