  1. Very proud to help Century Box celebrate the groundbreaking of their expanded Chase Street facility today. My office worked closely with Century Box over the course of planning this expansion to make sure that they could remain in the Merrimack Valley for many years to come. The expansion will double the footprint of the company and add approximately 89 new jobs!

By working together to end military sexual assault, we can create the conditions of mutual respect, camaraderie, and trust that enable each member of the military to succeed, just as every American needs them to.

  6. Did you watch Felix Baumgartner’s historic space jump? Soldier Systems Center Natick helped design some of the technology used to monitor Felix’s biometrics during the jump. This same technology will hopefully be used to monitor the health of our soldiers on the battlefield.

  7. Check out CQ’s story this week about our work in Congress against military sexual assault. As the article outlines, military sexual assault is still far too common but we are beginning to make important strides. I will continue working with Rep. Mike Turner and our Military Sexual Assault Prevention Caucus to make sure the military has all the tools it needs to properly address these crimes.
  8. This morning I checked in with mayors, town managers and local officials to get an update on the extent of the damage. First responders, public workers and utility crews have been working around the clock to provide assistance, clear debris...
, and get power back up and running. I’d like to thank them for urgently responding to those in need. For those of you still without power, be sure to report it to your utility company. Official estimated restoration times will come this afternoon after the utility companies assess the damage.

  9. I just got off a call with the Governor who updated me on the status of local, state, and federal coordination in preparing for Hurricane Sandy. Thank you to all of the first responders and utility workers currently on the ground helping to respond to this storm. Please stay safe as we prepare for the worst of it.
  10. Governor Patrick has declared a State of Emergency in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I urge you to take precautions to protect your homes and loved ones. Check-in with neighbors and friends, especially the elderly or anyone who may need special assistance.

  11. A reminder about Hurricane Sandy - it will be a large storm with impacts well beyond the center. As this Oct. 26 map from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shows, significant rainfall can be expected in several states along the East Coast.

  12. Thank you Human Rights Campaign for giving me a 100% on your annual scorecard. I am proud to be a founding member of the Congressional LGBT Caucus and will continue working towards equality for all Americans.
  13. Last night I hosted a screening of The Invisible War at the Lowell National Historical Park, a film chronicling the experiences of those who have survived military sexual trauma. After the film we hosted a moving panel discussion and spoke with audience members about their reactions to the film.

  14. Today is Food Day here in the Commonwealth and across the nation, a day we celebrate healthy eating and locally produced food. Fall is the perfect time of year to visit one of our over 500 Fifth District farms and enjoy the season’s produce!
  15. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and as a strong supporter of the Violence Against Women Act, I was outraged earlier this year when the House passed a significantly weakened version of this groundbreaking legislation. VAWA helps protect victims of domestic violence, helps women escape abusive relationships, and represented an historic step forward for women’s rights. If you need to talk to a confidential domestic violence councilor or have a friend who does, call the Massachusetts SafeLink Hotline at 1-877-785-2020.
  16. Are you signed up for my eNewsletter yet? This week’s edition includes my TIME editorial about the the critical need to develop lightweight and gender-specific body armor for our military men and women.
  17. Another year of energy savings and reduced emissions in Massachusetts! According to the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, the savings are equivalent to the annual electricity usage of 109,000 homes, the annual natural gas usage of nearly 15,000 homes and the annual reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from more than 84,000 cars.

  18. It’s Innovation Week in Massachusetts! The innovation economy is driving education, infrastructure, and technology improvements here in the Fifth District and across the Commonwealth that is creating jobs and boosting our local economy.
  19. Yesterday I presented a $3.2 million check to the Montachusett Regional Transit Authority for their new Ayer Parking Facility. This long awaited federal funding will allow MART to expand their business district parking and make it easier for commuters headed towards Boston.

  20. Today Time Magazine ran my editorial about the need to continue research and development on lightweight and gender-specific body armor. I have been a strong advocate in Congress on this critical issue and progress has been made. But much can be done to increase the safety and mobility of our armed forces.
  21. Thank you Salvatore’s Restaurant for hosting today’s Lawrence POW/MIA Day of Remembrance ceremony. Salvatore’s will be the first restaurant in the Commonwealth, and possibly the country, to dedicate a permanent place of honor to the over 92,000 POW/MIA’s that have not returned home since WWI. We will never forget those we are still missing at our tables.
  22. Good luck to all runners in the Baystate Marathon & Half Marathon in Lowell tomorrow! For those of you not running, here is spectator and traffic detour information:
  23. A second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional. I signed an Amicus Brief to this court in favor of this ruling because the evidence is clear: DOMA is discriminatory and must be overturned.
  24. Today is the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act. As River Day showed us, the Clean Water Act’s protections are essential to the well-being and economic vitality of our communities and I will continue to stand up for the Clean Water Act as a member of the Natural Resources Committee.
  25. Great piece on the Huffington Post today about the importance of having women’s voices in Congress, especially on issues such as military sexual assault. I will continue to stand up for women in the House and make sure that their voices are heard.
  26. Check out UMass Lowell's video of my speech at the grand opening of their new Emerging Technologies & Innovation Center.
