  5. Are you headed to the Georgia-Florida game this weekend? Keep an eye on Sandy!
...Tropical Storm Warning Over the Coastal Waters... ...Dangerous Coastal and Marine Conditions Friday through Saturday... Hurricane Sandy will track northward over the Bahamas on Friday then will shift northeast Friday night into Saturday...
. Strong northeast winds on Friday and Friday night will approach Tropical Storm force over the coastal waters and along the immediate coast. Winds will back to the north and northwest on Saturday as Sandy begins to track northeast away from the area. Scattered to numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms will impact coastal areas from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning. Gusty winds and periods of heavy rainfall can be expected in squalls. A high risk of rip currents, coastal flooding, beach erosion and high surf with breakers of 8 to 12 feet can be expected during the period. Coastal flooding and beach erosion will be most damaging at the times of high tide late Friday and early Saturday. West of Highway 301, skies will be partly cloudy with little rain chances. Temperatures will near 80 degrees each day with mild low temperatures in the mid 60s inland to low/mid 70s coast. Regardless of the exact forecast track of Sandy over the Atlantic, local impacts will include rough seas and increasing winds Friday through the weekend. A high risk of rip currents is expected as well as rough, dangerous surf, and a high surf advisory will be likely for portions of the northeast Florida coastline. Coastal flooding and beach erosion will also be likely. Over the marine waters, small craft advisories are expected for the nearshore waters, with gale conditions for the outer waters. Windy conditions and passing showers are expected along the east coast...while farther inland drier air will advect over the area making for partly cloudy skies. www.srh.noaa.gov/jax

Pictured here, from the left, Maj. Gen. Tom Moore, Assistant Adjutant General-Georgia Air National Guard; Maj. Gen. Jim Butterworth, Georgia’s Adjutant General; and Brig. Gen. Joe Jarrard (right), Assistant Adjutant General-Georgia Army National Guard, begin the first of what are to be regularly scheduled meetings with Governor Deal. Russell Carlson, Butterworth’s deputy adjutant general, also participated in the meeting.

The premise behind the meeting, Butterworth says, is to advise the governor regularly on the status of the organization, “where our Army and Air Guardsmen are deployed and what they are doing, and what resources are available – personnel and material-wise – to him at any given time for any given request for support.”

“Our team is doing an incredible job at identifying and tracking those resources, and by delivering this information to the Governor – personally – we’re able to receive his questions and answer them face-to-face,” Butterworth added. “We also want to know what his expectations of us and the organization are, and discuss how we can best meet those expectations as the Guard and State Defense Force moves forward, not only during the fiscal year, but far down the road.”

Butterworth, Carlson, Jarrard and Moore also want to come away from these meetings, Butterworth says, with the governor’s perspective on how best to carry – deliver – Georgia’s message to National Guard Bureau in Washington or Georgia’s congressional delegation, as any one of these Ga. DoD leaders – or all of them – meet with those bodies.

“Governor Deal’s extensive experience in Washington is something we can greatly benefit from,” Butterworth explained, “so that when we meet with Guard Bureau or the delegation, they have a clear understanding what it is we’re saying – what the governor is asking for, or saying.”
