Camp Statement on Discovery of Asian Carp eDNA in Lake Erie
Tuesday, August 28, 2012
“While the Chicago area gets most of the attention in the fight against Asian carp, the continued presence of eDNA in Lake Erie shows the broad threat these invasive species pose to the entire Great Lakes region. Today’s report underscores the need to hydrologically separate the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins, which is the only sure way to prevent Asian carp from devastating the lakes and $7 billion economy they support.” On July 6th, Congress approved and the president signed into law Camp’s bill, the “Stop Invasive Species Act.” The Act requires the Army Corps of Engineers to craft a plan to hydrologically separate the Mississippi River tributaries from the Great Lakes to prevent Asian carp and other invasive species from entering the Lakes. ###
