Rep. Pete Olson today issued the following statement in remembrance of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on this date 68 years ago:

“At 7:55 am on December 7, 1941, more than 350 Japanese aircraft pounded the U.S. Pacific Fleet, killing more than 2,000 service members and civilians, destroying 188 aircraft, and sinking four battleships along with a host of other ships.  This action resulted in the United States engaging in World War II and ultimately achieving victory. 

“The attack on Pearl Harbor was most assuredly as President Roosevelt said, “a day that will live in infamy.”  The Americans who responded to that unprovoked attack on our nation were selfless heroes who went on with Allied Forces to win World War II in defense of liberty and democracy across the globe.

“Just eight years ago, America had another day like Pearl Harbor Day.  On September 11, 2001 our nation was again brutally attacked on a clear morning by terrorists whose primary motive was to destroy everything that America represents.  The greatest generation has warned us about the dangers of complacency and the foolish notion that dialogue alone can keep us safe.

“As a Navy veteran, I know the importance of learning from history and ensuring that our military has the proper resources to protect and defend our nation. That is the lesson that the survivors of Pearl Harbor are striving to ensure we have learned.  I am committed to maintaining the lessons of Pearl Harbor and September 11th and keeping America safe.”
