Legislation also has been introduced calling for the design and placement in the visitors center of an "unknown slave" statue, to further recognize the contributions of slaves in building the Capitol. Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.), the bill’s author, said the statue would be "an acknowledgment of truth and an important symbol showing that the United States does not hide from its history, but rather learns from it." -

For 20 years, Rep. Gary Ackerman has tried to pass a federal law to prohibit all livestock too weak to walk from being slaughtered for human consumption. Last week, the Roslyn Heights Democrat said he's renewing his efforts after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a California law similar to his bill because federal regulations pre-empt state law. -
Ackerman Secures $2.9M for Hall of Science Program
January 8, 2012U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-Bayside, said he has secured nearly $3 million for Queens’ New York Hall of Science to develop a program for city students. The congressman said the federal funding would go toward the development and testing of SciGames, which uses technology to turn playground games into interactive learning experiences.
