Carter Urges President to Oppose Senate Immigration Plan
05/22/07Washington, May 22, 2007 -
U.S. Representative John Carter (R-TX), House Republican Conference Secretary, today met with President George W. Bush with other House and Senate Republican leaders. After the meeting, Congressman Carter made it clear to White House officials that he is opposed to the Senate’s plan for immigration reform and urged President Bush to oppose it, although the President has voiced support for the bill.
“I emphasized to the White House that Americans are looking for enforcement of our laws – not a plan that will provide amnesty for those who have acted illegally,” said Congressman Carter. “Any bill that comes through Congress should be heavy on enforcement, and I sent a clear message to the President that I will not support any plan that rewards illegal activity, even if he supports it.”
