CARTER FIGHTS POTENTIAL CUT TO TROOP FUNDING
02/13/07Washington, DC, Feb 13, 2007 - U.S. Representative John Carter (R-Round Rock) today joined House Republicans in requesting the Democratic leadership allow a Republican amendment to H.Con.Res. 63 that will safeguard funds for American troops. H.Con.Res. 63 states that Congress disapproves of the decision of President George W. Bush announced on January 10, 2007, to deploy more than 20,000 additional United States combat troops to Iraq.
“We need to consider adding language to this bill that will prohibit Congress from cutting funds to our troops in harm’s way,” said Congressman Carter. “In the end, the majority wants to cut funding to our soldiers, but they are hesitant to accomplish this in a direct manner.
“I am opposed to any resolution that de-funds our troops or encourages our enemies in a time of war,” continued Congressman Carter. “House Democrats such as Representatives Moran and Murtha have stated that this is just the ‘bark’ and the real ‘bite’ will come with the spending bill. This is just their first step to de-funding our troops.”
“I join many of my colleagues in vowing to never vote to cut funds to our soldiers,” added Congressman Carter. “It is a shame that many of the House Democrats cannot promise the same.”
