  Welcome to the Commission

The State of Illinois is committed to fighting discrimination baseded on ethnicity, religion, skin color, gender, disability or sexual orientation in Illinois.

The Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes, formed in 1999, is the state’s answer to solving the problems of discrimination and hate-based violence.

With one of the most comprehensive hate crimes laws in the country, Illinois has the tools to respond swiftly and appropriately to incidents of discrimination and hate crimes. The Commission actively works with law enforcement, the courts, religious leaders, schools, community organizations and social service agencies to educate and foster acceptance and tolerance. The Commission is also uniquely poised to make statutory and programmatic changes that will further uproot sources of discrimination and bias.

The Commission also offers the citizens of Illinois direct access to the people who are addressing the issues of hatred and bigotry.
