Carter to host first Fort Hood Soldier Appreciation Day

Washington, D.C., Aug 2, 2007 -

U.S. Representative John Carter (R-Round Rock) will host the first Fort Hood Soldier Appreciation Day at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock on Saturday, August 4th. Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a meal and then down to the field to watch the game. Over 500 soldiers and families from Fort Hood will gather at the Dell Diamond to eat dinner served to them by 200 volunteers and city officials and watch the Round Rock Express play baseball.

“It is not often that an opportunity to express our appreciation to our brave men and women stationed at Fort Hood comes along,” Rep. Carter said. “This is a great time for community leaders and volunteers in Central Texas to express their gratitude to our soldiers.”

The idea for a Fort Hood Soldier Appreciation Day began after Rep. Carter led 75 elected officials and other community leaders from Williamson County to Fort Hood where they were given the opportunity to interact with the men and women on post and experience first-hand the type of training the soldiers receive before deploying to Iraq.

“It was so amazing to see all these community leaders interact on such a personal level with these soldiers,” Carter continued. “They were touched by their stories, and since then I have had so many of them ask me what we could do to show them how much the communities appreciate their service to our country. That is where we got the idea ‘Serve those that Serve You’.”

The soldier appreciation day is sponsored by First Texas Bank, Gattiland, Round Rock Express, Wag-a-Bag and Congressman Carter.
