Carter Opposes Democrats' Resolution to Cut Support for Our Troops
02/16/07Washington, DC, Feb 16, 2007 -
U.S. Representative John Carter (R-TX), House Republican Conference Secretary, today voted against a House Democrat-sponsored resolution disapproving of President Bush’s new plan for Iraq. H.Con.Res. 63 states that Congress disapproves of President Bush’s decision announced on January 10, 2007 to deploy more than 20,000 additional United States combat troops to Iraq.
Congressman Carter took the opportunity to address the House of Representatives in chambers on Wednesday during the week of debate that precedes the vote. He focused his remarks on the consequences of ceding victory to the terrorists and the poor leadership demonstrated by the House’s majority party on this issue.
“We need to lend our full support to the troops abroad in order to achieve a winning strategy in Iraq. If we give up on our troops, we give the terrorists the momentum they need to further organize and bring the fight to our soil,” said Congressman Carter. “The Iraq Study Group, the commanders on the ground, and Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki all called for more boots on the ground to help quell the violence in Iraq and provide the stability we need to bring our troops home. President Bush took their collective advice and now the Democrat majority has said no,” continued Carter.
Despite Republican efforts to convince the House otherwise, the resolution was passed with a majority vote.
