Jan 17, 2011

Bass: “On this holiday, we recommit ourselves to a life of community service and public engagement. Dr.Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King both taught us all that social justice, civil rights, and caring for our fellow neighbors is the highest form of service. Too many individuals in our communities need a helping hand and on Martin Luther King Day, let us renew our pledge to serve those less fortunate than us and rebuild our communities in need.”

Washington, DC – Karen Bass released the following statement in advance of the Martin Luther King Holiday.

On Monday, Congresswoman Bass will participate in the Martin Luther King Day Parade in Los Angeles. The statement follows:

“On this holiday, we recommit ourselves to a life of community service and public engagement. Dr. MartinLuther King and Coretta Scott King both taught us all that social justice, civil rights, and caring for our fellow neighbors is the highest form of service. Too many individuals in our communities need a helping hand and on Martin Luther King Day, let us renew our pledge to serve those less fortunate than us and rebuild our communities in need.

“We cannot forget during these difficult times that civility is an essential ingredient of our democracy.  Though at times our political differences are strong, our nation is made great though a vibrant political discourse where we cherish our freedoms and celebrate our differences.  Dr. King taught us all the most valuable lessons in civics and civil discourse and those teachings cannot be forgotten no matter what our political climate is like.

“This year, I am thankful and honored to serve our community in Congress.  We have worked together over many years to fulfill Dr. King’s legacy and this obligation is a lifetime commitment that we all continue to fulfill.  As I begin my service in the U.S. House of Representatives, together let us build upon the progress we have achieved thus far and continue to make our communities stronger and more prosperous.”
